English Literature

Why Literature

I chose to study English Literature because of my passion for books and all things written. The power of the word has always amazed me, and I find it truly inspiring how so many different people find personal connections to the same novel, book, or poem. I fell in love with reading and writing because it is not just a way to temporarily escape from the world, but because it is so many things. It is an incredible way to express myself, a new way to look at the world through another's eyes, and an exceptional way to experience life.

I had never planned on wanting to teach. In fact, I swore up and down through grade school that the one thing I would never do was become a teacher of any sort. However, I took a Shakespeare course in my senior year of High School, and it truly inspired me. I had always loved books before, but in that class I found a real wonder in examining written works. My teacher, at the time, showed me connections I had never seen before, and the magic that I never noticed. After that class I did not just adore writing, but I found I was more thrilled with looking at the deeper meanings of existing works. I decided that I wanted to help others see that same wonder. I wanted to inspire the next great lover of literature, just as I was inspired.

Now I aspire to share my love of literature with the world.
